THE
STEPS IN THE PROCESS
After
reviewing samples of the child’s art, a drawing is selected that is
suitable for sculpture. Size and price are agreed upon. (Price is
dependent upon size and complexity of the finished product, 12 inches to 6
feet, $200 to $4000.)
-
The
child is encouraged to keep a diary throughout the process.
-
Phelan
completes a drawing of the sculpture and transfers the drawing onto
steel.
-
The
child artist and Phelan meet to review the drawing on steel.
-
The
artist is asked to add specific features such as facial
characteristics or other details.
-
The
design for the base is decided upon.
-
The
sculpture is cut and welded out of steel.
-
The
artist and sculptor review the work prior to painting. Adjustments
are made as needed to the steel structure. The artist designates
color choices. The colors chosen are negotiated with Phelan who
keeps in mind the artistic integrity of the finished product. The
artist’s wishes will be complied with as much as possible.
-
The
sculpture is painted according to the agreed upon specifications.
The artist may participate in the painting, however, since the paint
is fiberglass based it is only applied under Phelan’s supervision
and with proper protective gear worn. The parent may elect for
Phelan to do all of the fiberglass work.
One
of the most impressive things about the work that Phelan creates in collaboration with children is the sense of the
individual's artistic expression she is able to convey through the piece.~Michelle Banks, ParenTeacher
